Dear Spike's Friends:
I was there, in the fall of 2005, standing in the shadow of the tapered golden dome of the Imam Ali Mosque in Najaf, as Iraqis braved shootings, bombings, and even beheadings to vote in that nation's first constitutional referendum. On that day, 10 Iraqi poll workers were kidnapped, dozens of others were killed or injured, and six U.S. service members lost their lives.
What's stopping you, today, from voting?

Wow, thanks for posting this; definitely puts things in perspective. Luckily Oregon makes things easy on me by letting me fill out my ballot at my leisure and send it in. I can't imagine witnessing what you did over there.
By the way, I adore reading your posts to Spike. Been reading since "the beginning." She's a lucky girl.
Absolutely nothing stopping me here in Florida. Stood in line this morning and voted with my daughter. It was nice to see all the people exercising democracy- more people than I've ever seen at the polls.
You make a very good point. Only we can make change.
I can't begin to imagine what that trip to Iraq was like.
I stood 4th in line this morning at 7:00, as the poll workers had some trouble figuring out who was going to do what and how. A few people were a bit miffed at having to wait.
The young man behind me said, "I've seen on TV where people in other parts of the world travel for days and stand in lines for hours and hours just to be able to vote. This is nothing."
He's right. And you are right. We are very lucky.

My first graders cast their secret ballots this morning. Obama won 16 to 4!

For the first time in MY voting history of 38 years, I waited in line...for 1.5 hours. I considered it a privilege.
I voted! A cute 80-year-old veteran was in line behind me, wearing a cap with an American flag on it. I felt proud to vote with him. :)
My husband and I decided to do early voting this year. Good thing because he is out of town. We took our son with us because we want him to know at a early age how it is a right to vote! Especially myself in being a woman.
